Bahrain National Drag Racing Championship ready for take-off

BIC, Sakhir:

The first round of the 2008 Bahrain National Drag Racing Championship looks set
for lift-off as the test sessions came to an end last night.

Hundreds of fans, from across the GCC, are expected to come flooding through the
gates this evening to witness the fierce competition this season, run by the
Bahrain Drag Racing Club.

Over the last two days scrutineering checks at the BIC maintenance area have
been taking place and registrations are underway for drivers and bikers
participating. Special safety and security checks have also taken place to
ensure that the cars and bikes comply with racing standards. Many people, more
than last year, have come forward during the registrations to put their names
down for the event. Over 60 cars were entered in different categories on
Wednesday, all ready for Thursday’s test sessions.

Seven of the drivers confirmed for the most nail-biting of categories, the “pro
mod”, will include defending champion Emirati Bader “Superman” Al’Ahli in the
only Mustang Super Charger in the Middle East. He will be facing fellow Emirati
Khaled Al Belushi who came second place in last year’s Championship.

From the local talent, the strip will see Bahraini champ Ali Aryan aboard the
Mustang Willys, the car which saw Bader Al-Ahli through victory last year.
Khaled Mohammed, also Bahraini, will provide added pressure for the title as he
races for the Popeye team. As for Qatari Al-Anabi team, they are looking to get
things stirring as they enter top racers Mustafa Al-Atat and American Shannon
Jenkins in the line-up.

Juma Al-Seem will have all eyes fixated on him as he won the Outlaw category
last year and will be trying his luck against the “pro mods” this year. Many
more are expected to come forward before the first round kicks off later today.

Fans who wish to see who will fail and who will succeed can do so for only 3BD –
5BD. As for those wishing to buckle up and try their luck, Kart Zone will also
be open from 1530 – 2230.
